Throughout the world, there are those who live behind gates and those who live outside of them. While the security those gates bring is desirable and good, the majority of the world lives in a very vulnerable state, lacking physical and economic security. Even in America, there are many virtual gates, outside of which people lack a sense of security about the futures they work so hard to protect.
In studying the life of Jesus, we learn that he "also suffered outside the city gate." His answer to a hurting world was to take a message of healing and hope to people where they lived, regardless of social acceptability. While that is far from my natural response, I am compelled by the message he brings to seek to follow in his footsteps. So, "let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore. For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come."
I hope you'll enjoy this journey with us as we learn more about life "outside the gates."
